Most patients with low mood suffer from impaired sleep, with about 80 percent suffering from insomnia1 and around half also experiencing nervousness or tension.2 Not only do natural medicine practitioners need a solution that covers all of these symptoms, they must navigate medically prescribed treatments. Combined saffron, lavender and turmeric have been found to do this.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of saffron found that a daily dose of 30mg extract had a large and positive effect on those experiencing issues with both emotional balance and nervousness.3 A systematic review that included six studies found that a dose of 30mg/day resulted in statistically significant improvements in mood symptoms after the first week, and continued for the rest of the trial (six to eight weeks).4 This effect was compared to placebo and medically prescribed treatments.4

It is suggested that crocin and safranal in saffron inhibit the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine, and serotonin; they also possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and are able to modulate Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) expression and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.3

A 2019 meta-analysis which included nine studies found curcumin had a significant positive effect on those with mild mood imbalance at baseline.6 Curcumin is involved in serotonin and dopamine release, the inhibition of the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO) which plays a role in the metabolism of neurotransmitters and detoxifying endogenous and exogenous amines, the regulation of the HPA axis and increasing levels of BDNF.6 Its most studied mechanisms relate to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. For example, curcumin suppresses the transcription signalling pathways of nuclear factor kappa β, essential in the production of proinflammatory cytokines; and curcuminoids reduce C-reactive protein levels.6

Relieves Symptoms of Mild Anxiety and Stress

The two primary terpenoid constituents of lavender essential oil, linalool and linalyl acetate, may reduce restlessness, in combination via inhibition of voltage-gated calcium channels, reduction of 5HT1A receptor activity, and increased parasympathetic tone.7

One study used a lavender essential oil with 36.8% linalool and 34.2% linalyl acetate, administered at either 80mg or 160mg per day, a medication or placebo for 10 weeks. Sixty per cent of those taking the higher dose of lavender experienced at least a halving of the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) at study end. Improvements were seen after 4 weeks.8 This was compared to 51% of those taking 80mg daily; 34% taking medication and 38% of those taking placebo.8 The lower dose resulted in improvements after 6 weeks of supplementation.8 Lavender also had a significant effect on mood balance.8

In a meta-analysis, saffron had a large positive effect on symptoms of anxiety.3 Saffron lowers the HPA response to stress.4 Safranal and crocin prevented elevations in plasma corticosterone levels in animal models of stress.4

Curcumin was also found to have a positive effect on anxiety symptoms as measured by validated tools including the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale.6 Its ability to inhibit MAO leading to reduced serotonin turnover is believed to be one of the mechanisms involved in reducing these symptoms.6

Reduces Sleeplessness

In traditional Western herbal medicine lavender oil is prescribed for sleeplessness. Patients with symptoms such as agitation or restlessness and sleep disturbance received 80mg of lavender essential oil with 36.8% linalool and 34.2% linalyl acetate for 10 weeks, or placebo – there was a 44.7% reduction in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) compared to 30.9% in those taking placebo.9
