What type of Magnesium citrate is used in CitraMag 400?

In Australia, there are numerous forms of magnesium citrate permitted for use in listed medicines. Under Australian regulatory requirements, the type of magnesium used in CitraMag 400 is the anhydrous form and is required to be displayed under the ingredient name ‘magnesium citrate’. This form of magnesium citrate is known by many names, including Trimagnesium dicitrate anhydrous or TMDC (anhydrous).

It is the same composition - three magnesium ions per two citrate ions in a 3:2 ratio. And it is formed in the same way: neutralisation of citric acid with a highly pure magnesium source, it undergoes precipitation and dehydration and when ingested, the citric acid promotes magnesium absorption by increasing its solubility. Once in the intestines, it easily dissociates, allowing the free unbound magnesium ions to be absorbed across the intestines, producing a highly bioavailable form of magnesium.
