The Acid-Alkali balance
To sustain life, it is vital that plasma pH remains very close to 7.4 at all times (a slightly alkaline range of 7.35 to 7.45).1 This range is under very, tight physiological control using biochemical buffers.1 When we consume acid-forming foods and plasma pH moves out of this comfort zone, one method of buffering the acidity draws on stored mineral salts, such as calcium hydroxyapatite in the bones.2 Long term this may impact the, integrity of the mineral matrix in the bone and place a load on the kidneys. Subclinical low-grade acidosis has been linked to chronic diseases, such as osteoporosis, chronic low back pain, kidney stones and sarcopenia.1,3
Citrate compounds are organic mineral salts that have a high bioavailability and can be easily absorbed in the small intestine.1 Citrates can also, neutralise the overload caused by acid forming foods and help to re-establish acid-alkali balance in the body.1
One study indicated that this also affected bone health, finding biochemical markers of bone loss were reduced with supplemental potassium, citrate.2 In fact, adequate intake of nutrients including zinc, calcium, magnesium and potassium can lead to increased bone mineralisation, while, citrates also supply energy.3 Citrate is metabolised via the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation to produce ATP. Other minerals such as, selenium, zinc, chromium and molybdenum can assist in the reduction and oxidation balance through redox reactions, as well as supporting, glucose metabolism and thyroid hormones needed for acid-alkali balance.
Consumption of sodium bicarbonate may enhance sports performance
Alkaline multimineral formulations can neutralise diet-induced metabolic acidosis.1 Sodium bicarbonate is more beneficial than sodium, lactate, sodium citrate or sodium chloride. Studies have shown that consumption of sodium bicarbonate may enhance sports performance.4

Vitamin K2: the key nutrient for calcium homeostasis
Studies have demonstrated that vitamin K2 is limited, even in a healthy Western diet.5, This is highly relevant in the context of calcium, supplementation, where there is evidence to suggest there may be a risk of accelerating calcium deposition in soft tissue and blood vessels, leading to arterial calcification and stiffening.7
An adequate amount of vitamin K2 in the plasma has been shown to lower the risk of vascular damage caused by calcium deposition.5, Vitamin, K2 plays a vital role in calcium metabolism homeostasis which is mediated by vitamin K2 dependent extracellular proteins, including Matrix, Gla protein which inhibits calcium deposition and vascular calcification.7, Additionally, vitamin K2 activates osteocalcin which stimulates bone, mineralisation, promoting the uptake of calcium into the bone matrix.7, Vitamin K2 is commonly used to prevent and reverse arterial calcification, when calcium supplementation is employed for alkalising purposes.5 An optimal vitamin K2 status can limit osteoclastogenesis, lowering the calcium-associated health risks, improving bone remodelling, mineral density and reducing fracture risk.5,6,8
