New evidence for stress, mild anxiety & PMS support

PH Balance Can Affect Mood

  • For the first time, research has identified a direct correlation between high dietary acid load (DAL) & an increased prevalence of stress & mild anxiety.1
  • A study involving over 4000 healthy people found those in the highest DAL category had a 92% greater risk of developing stress & mild anxiety.1
  • Even moderate increases in DAL can significantly stimulate the secretion & activity of cortisol which can alter glutamate neurotransmission in limbic areas of the brain & influence emotional processing & behaviour. 2

Supports Healthy Acid Alkali-Acid Balance

Target nutrients: Citrate minerals including potassium, magnesium, calcium & zinc

  • Citrate compounds offer high bioavailability & can counteract the systemic burden caused by acid-forming foods to assist in re-establishing acid-alkali balance in the body.3

Reduces Mild Anxiety & Supports the Stress Response

Target nutrients: Vitamin C, magnesium, vitamin B6, taurine, glycine & zinc

  • Even if pH imbalance is not part of a patient’s pathophysiology, these key nutrients provide the crucial co-factors required for the health & function of the nervous system.
  • Research suggests 248mg of magnesium daily for 6 weeks can significantly improve symptoms of mild anxiety in adults with mild to moderate mood disturbances.4
  • Taurine functions as an inhibitory neuromodulator by agonising GABA-A, glycine and NMDA receptors. It can partially substitute for GABA by causing inhibition of neuronal excitability.5

Reduces oxidative Stress

Target nutrients: Vitamin C, taurine, zinc & selenium

  • Oxidative stress is consistently implicated as a driving factor for mood imbalances.
  • Brain concentrations of vitamin C are higher than in any other part of the body. Vitamin C can offer first-line protection against free radicals produced by biological processes.6
  • Taurine reduces oxidative stress by reducing the generation of superoxide in the mitochondria.5

The Crucial Role of Calcium in PMS

  • Therapeutic doses of magnesium and vitamin B6 are a strong combination to address the common symptoms of PMS and female reproductive hormone imbalance. Calcium is one nutrient that may be too easily overlooked in PMS. A large body of evidence suggests that calcium has significant clinical benefits for patients with PMS.
  • A 2020 systematic review including 14 studies of over 2600 participants, showed that serum calcium levels were lower in PMS subjects. In addition, calcium supplementation significantly improved the incidence of PMS and reduced its related symptoms.7

Relieves Mood Changes Associated With PMS

Target nutrients: Calcium, vitamin B6, magnesium & vitamin C

  • Clinical trials using doses of 500mg of calcium daily for two cycles, significantly reduced the number and severity of PMS symptoms including mild anxiety, poor mood, emotional changeability, fluid retention and somatic changes within the first month and, greater still, in the second month of treatment.8
  • The combination of 500mg of calcium and 40mg of vitamin B6 showed a more significant reduction of PMS symptoms and more effective symptom control than individual nutrients alone.9
  • The synergistic effect of daily magnesium citrate (200mg) and vitamin B6 (50mg) was more effective than magnesium alone at decreasing anxiety-related PMS symptoms within the first month of treatment.10

Supports Healthy Reproductive Hormones & Regulates the Menstrual Cycle

Target nutrients: Magnesium, zinc & vitamin B6

  • Magnesium and other electrolytes have been shown to help control the symptoms of PMS with deficiency considered an aetiological factor of PMS. Research shows a correlation between PMS and low serum and red blood cell magnesium levels during the luteal phase.11,12
  • Zinc deficiency has been linked to impaired synthesis and/ or secretion of FSH and LH, menstrual cycle disruption and impaired reproductive development.13
  • Vitamin B6 is a co-factor required for methylation which is involved in the healthy metabolism of oestrogen. B6 also plays a key role in regulating brain monoamine production and is an immediate precursor of serotonin and dopamine.14
