Technical Information
Technical Information: Orthoplex Activated B Complex
Beneficial During Times of Stress
Biologically active forms of Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate), Folic Acid (Folinic Acid) and Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin 5-Phosphate), can bypass the enzymatic processes in the body that lead to the active nutrient forms, and may therefore produce more significant results.
Research has identified genetic differences in the activity of certain biologic enzymes, with some individuals exhibiting the potential inability to intrinsically activate, and therefore utilise, non-active forms of B vitamins.1,2
Folinic Acid bypasses the deconjugation and reduction steps required for Folic Acid use in the body. Folinic Acid has been deemed to be a more metabolically active form of Folate, and is believed to be capable of elevating Folate coenzyme levels in circumstances where Folic Acid supplementation fails. It has been suggested that Folinic Acid is more readily transported through the blood-brain-barrier into the central nervous system, and has a longer half life in the body than Folic Acid.3
The active form of vitamin B6 – Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate – is a cofactor for the activity of a number of enzymes involved in metabolism.4 Riboflavin 5-Phosphate is the active form of Vitamin B2, which is an essential component of the electron transport chain, energy production and many other metabolic processes.5
Beneficial During Times of Stress
During periods of intense stress, there is an increased requirement for water-soluble B vitamins.6-8 This demand may be intensified by stress-induced impairment of digestive function9-11 and reduced local parasympathetic nervous system activity.12 B vitamins support the body’s response to stress by supporting the respective body systems and overall nutrient status.13
Aids, Assists or Helps in the Maintenance of General Well-Being
As an exercise,8 illness14-16 and psychological stress6,7 tax metabolic pathways that depend on B vitamins such as Thiamine, Riboflavin and Pyridoxine, the requirements for these vitamins may be increased in stressed, active, or recovering individuals.
When viewing the Citric Acid Cycle (Figure 1), it is evident how vital the B group vitamins are as cofactors for the function of this pathway. If the body is deficient in any of these integral nutrients due to poor supply, reduced absorption or increased demand, it is clear how energy production and well-being may be compromised.17-21
Thiamine serves as a cofactor for several enzymes involved in carbohydrate catabolism, including pyruvate dehydrogenase, transketolase, alpha-ketoglutarate, as well as amino acid catabolism.22
Two fundamental co-enzymes of the Citric Acid Cycle – flavinadenine dinucleotide (FAD) and flavin mononucleotide (FMN) (Riboflavin 5-Phosphate) – are both important for the body’s production of adenosine triphosphate and rely upon Vitamin B2 as a cofactor.23 The activated form of Vitamin B2 bypasses a biochemical step24 and may offer more efficient support for energy production.
Niacin is involved in numerous biological functions and is a precursor for the coenzymes nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydrogen (NADH), which are involved in a number of metabolic functions.25,26
Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) is required for coenzyme A synthesis – an important component of energy storage and release. In conjunction with Thiamine, Riboflavin and Niacin, Vitamin B5 is involved in the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate and alpha-ketoglutarate in the Citric Acid Cycle.27

Orthoplex Green Range
The Orthoplex Green range was developed by nutritional biochemist Henry Osiecki over 30 years ago. Henry is an award-winning biochemist who, after years in clinic, developed the Orthoplex range of Naturopathic Medicines. The Orthoplex range is known for being the first to market with new formulations, incorporating the latest in clinical research.
'I am impressed with the quality and effectiveness of Orthoplex products. I have prescribed Orthoplex products to my patients for over 30 years. Orthoplex products have assisted me in successfully helping many 1000's of patients to better health.'
HealthMasters Naturopath Kevin Tresize ND
Since day one, Bio Concepts has been committed to providing the highest quality products, with absolute transparency and disclosure of all excipients, believing every component is important when it comes to effective treatment.
In his clinical years, Henry's approach to treatment plans was that they must always be tailored to the individual. As such, Bio Concepts formulations have always focused on providing the correct dosage for specific biochemical pathways, rather than just delivering the largest dose possible.
Henry has written university courses, several books and scientific papers, and is the founder of the Bio Concepts Education Centre.
Orthoplex Green is a practitioner supplement range and should be taken according to the recommendation of a qualified practitioner.
