Warnings, Contraindications and Cautions
Warnings, Contraindications and Cautions: MediHerb Vira-Immune Complex
- Warning that St John's Wort affects the way many prescription medicines work. Please consult with the prescribing doctor to ensure no drug-herb interactions occur
- Caution is advised in patients taking other medication, including combined oral contraceptives
- Contraindicated during pregnancy, lactation, in hypertension and oedema
- May cause hyperaesthesia in some sensitive individuals especially when combined with a high exposure to sunlight
- St John's Wort is not advisable in cases of known photosensitivity and in those taking photosensitising agents. Patients taking high doses should avoid excessive exposure to sunlight and UV radiation
- Contraindicated with the following drugs: thiazide or loop diuretics, warfarin, digoxin, immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclosporin, indinavir (HIV protease inhibitor), nevirapine (HIV non-nucleoside transcriptase inhibitor), docetaxel by injection, phenprocoumon, nifedipine, methadone, finasteride, clozapine, cancer chemotherapeutic drugs such as irinotecan and calcium channel antagonists such as verapamil
- Caution is advised in patients receiving prednisolone by injection and in those with elevated liver enzymes taking immunosuppressives
- Avoid long-term use in patients taking antihyperintensive medications and potassium-depleting drugs and place patients on a high potassium diet
- Consume at least two hours away from ingestion of mineral supplements
- Not to be used in children under five years of age
- Discontinue 7 days prior to general anaesthesia
- If patient symptoms persist, seek additional professional advice
