• BioCeuticals Saccharomyces boulardii (SB), a subspecies of S. cerevisiae, is a non-pathogenic biotherapeutic probiotic agent that supports the establishment of friendly bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT).
• In the GIT, SB increases the production of secretory IgA (slgA), short-chain fatty acids and the activity of the brush border disaccharide digestive enzymes.
• It also discourages the growth of unfriendly micro-organisms and reduces digestive inflammatory mediators.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:

Take only ONE of the following dose recommendations, or as professionally prescribed.

Adults:

To reduce the risk of travellers’ diarrhoea symptoms: Take 1-2 capsules one to two times a day.

To maintain healthy digestive system function: Take 2 capsules two times a day.

Children 2 months-17 years:

To reduce diarrhoea: Give 1 capsule three times a day.

Use in children only under adult supervision. For children under 5 years (or older children unable to swallow), capsule contents must be emptied and mixed with a small amount of food or liquid and consumed promptly.

Travellers’ diarrhoea

Travellers’ diarrhoea (TD) is a common health problem; incidence ranges from between 5–50% depending on the destination.1 The incubation period is usually between two and three days1 and major symptoms include diarrhoea (four to six loose, watery or bloody bowel movements per day), nausea and abdominal cramps. If untreated, the duration of TD is between two and six days.1 Most cases of TD (80%–85%) are due to infection by bacterial pathogens such as enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, enteroaggregative E. coli, Campylobacter jejuni, Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Aeromonas hydrophila, Yersinia entercolitica and Vibrio cholerae.1,3

Saccharomyces boulardii (SB)

Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.5 Equilibrium within the gastrointestinal microflora is essential to good health, this resists colonisation of the digestive tract by pathogenic microorganisms. Disruption of the intestinal microflora occurs in many pathological situations such as infectious diarrhoea.6

There are several mechanisms by which SB may prevent and relieve diarrhoea. These include regulation of intestinal microbial balance, interference with pathogens capacity to colonise, infect and inflame the mucosa, modulation of immune responses, maintenance of the gastrointestinal barrier function and initiation of enzymatic activity preferring absorption and nutrition.7
